RAMBU SOLO' - Funeral Ceremony

The Torajans treat their deceased in a very unique way. Various kinds of funeral ceremonies from very simple to very elaborate ones can be put up for the deceased. For the elaborate one, it looks from out side as a big party - a lot of people get together and various activities take place, but all of these are actually a reflection of strong kinship and friendship among Torajans. In the old days, there are two factors determining the magnitude of the ceremony, namely, the social status and the wealth of the deceased and his/her family members. Nowadays, the latter has become the dominant factor as such the ceremony tends to be seen as a mean to maintain or to raise the social status of the family.Various rituals accompanied the ceremony in the old days are no longer practiced as most Torajans have become Christians. Some denominations have even completely banned any kinds of ceremonies associated to the deceased. Recently these denominations gain popularity among Torajans especially the young people for practical and economic reasons.
